Growing up – Labor Day meant getting up and heading to the beach rain or shine. My mom – she loved the beach and everyday she had off from work that’s where we headed – lathered down in baby oil and iodine we were ready to roll.
Memories of those days are tucked in my heart like they were yesterday. My mom worked hard and deserved a day of labor – and so did we.
Think about God – He knew what it was like to work. He was a worker bee Himself – look around at what He did for us in one week. His Word tells us that our work – it’s not always like tending to a pretty garden, but at times – it’s like working a difficult stubborn field of thorns.
So yes – when we feel as though we’re struggling through just to put bread on the table, we must remember – there’s dignity in accomplishing just that.
His Word warns those not working hard enough and consoles those who have been working hard and need rest. Think about the disciples – they worked so hard they barely had time to stop and eat – think how comforting it must have been for them to hear from Jesus Himself to come and take a break.
This is the message many of us need in this high pressured world we live in.
Honoring Him doesn’t always mean doing more and more – but also means – taking a break at His command.
Bottom line – our most important work of all is getting connected and staying connected to Him and the One He has sent. We just need to believe in this truth, which doesn’t seem like work at all because – it’s easy and simple, yet – accomplishes the most important thing in our life.
So yes – on this Labor Day, at any time i the day – let’s grab our family and friends, let’s take a break and know that our labors are totally worthwhile.
