“With humility and obedience – far below the radar screen of celebrity status – they carried out God’s will”
In the Gospel of Luke – he was sparing on the details of Mary and Joseph’s trip – the very fact there are few details must mean it was mostly uneventful.
However, we can imagine it otherwise, think about it – any woman in her ninth month of pregnancy is physically miserable — it’s difficult to sit for long stretches and when she does stop for rest – she finds it difficult to sleep.
So imagine Mary and Joseph traveling in a caravan – with Mary riding much of the trip on a donkey – it was dark, cold and damp at night – she was stressed and Joseph was stressed too.
The trip would have taken about four days – we know during this week – they travelled hard trying to reach Bethlehem, and on the way – they will find themselves having to pass through Samaria where Jewish travelers were marked for bandits.
Oh but yes – God was watching over Mary and Joseph and we know they made it – but only to find out that Bethlehem, normally a sleepy little town, was bustling with Jews who had returned to register for the census.
Disappointment after disappointment – it didn’t matter – they continued on without question as they knew this was their destiny.
This story changes the whole way we look at the hustle and bustle of Christmas week – as we go through our days may we all be reminded of what it will bring – in a land long long ago, they too knew – Christmas is coming.
We are loved by love Himself. He loves us big and He loves us strong, and yes – love wins period.
“For with God, nothing shall be impossible” Luke 1:37
